After 5 months and 6 days in Asia, we landed in Auckland for a three week road trip round New Zealand! Here are a few of our North Island highlights:
Hobbiton Movie Set
Brilliant for Lord of the Rings fans but still impressive if you’re not, the tour of the set takes you round all the famous hobbit holes and filming locations, ending with an ale in the Green Dragon Inn.
Tamaki Maori Village
A hilarious evening spent in the forest being taught the haka and eating a traditional hangi meal cooked underground. Not the most authentic experience (their tattoos were painted on!) but enjoyable anyway, especially the feast!
Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
An active geothermal park with amazing craters and coloured hot pools. It was like being on another planet – one that smelt strongly of egg!
Skydiving in Taupo
Seth’s birthday present: Jumping out of a plane at 15000 ft over Lake Taupo
Tongariro Alpine Crossing
An amazing 19.4km hike across volcanic craters and snow, this trek through “Mordor” was one of the scenic highlights of our entire trip.
Art Deco Napier
Flattened by an earthquake in the 30s and rebuilt in Art Deco style, we really loved Napier. Also the start of the New Zealand wine trail, we just wish we were there longer!
After a fantastic 6 days exploring the North, all that was left to do was jump on a ferry in Wellington and cross the Cook Strait to the South Island to begin our adventure there…
